Top Five – Sidebar Gadget

Zeigt die fünf Prozesse, die aktuell am meisten Prozessorlast oder Arbeitsspeicher in Anspruch nehmen…
Dieses Gadget habe ich schon vor längerer Zeit gebastelt, aber bisher nicht veröffentlicht. Ich habe mich nun endlich durchgerungen einige Sachen zu optimieren und dem Gadget den letzten Schliff zu geben.
Wer kennt das nicht? Das System wird auf einmal träge und arbeitet nicht mehr richtig flott, die CPU läuft auf 100% aber man hat keinen Schimmer wer sich gerade über den Prozessor hermacht. Was tut man?
Bisher hat man den Taskmanager geöffnet und die aktuellen Prozesse nach ihrer CPU Auslastung sortiert. Genau das übernimmt nun dieses Gadget und man hat somit immer im Blick wer aktuell der größte Ressourcen Schmarotzer ist.
In den Einstellungen des Gadgets kann man festlegen ob man die Top Fünf der CPU-Hungrigen oder die der Speicherhungrigen Prozesse angezeigt bekommen möchte. Wer beides auf einmal im Blick haben will kann das Gadget einfach zwei Mal zur Sidebar hinzufügen und jedes einzelne entsprechend konfigurieren.
Als Abfrage Intervall haben sich bei mir 3 Sekunden für die CPU Auslastung und 15 Sekunden für Speicherauslastung bewährt.

Hallo erstaml. sehr schönes ding. Nutze bisher alle Gadgets von dir, leider fehlt mir aber noch eine art „HDD-Monito“ in deinem Style. Wäre nett wenn du dich da mal ranmachen könntest. Aber erstmal Spitzen Arbeit, Respekt und Großes Dankeschön.

Sehr schönes Gadget!Kannst du auch ein Gadget machen das sich die Sidebar per Maus ein/ausblendet?So ein gadget gibt es nämlich noch nicht,du wärst der erste 🙂

@kiff: geschmackssache. Ich finde z.B. das ist neben dem CPU monitor eines der sinnvollsten. Ich gehöre nämlich auch zu denjenigen die oft den taskmanager für CPU auslastungskontrolle missbrauchen.

Auch wieder sehr nette Gadgets.
Ein HDD Monitoringtool wäre natürlich noch die perfekte Ergänzung für die „alles auf einem Blick“ Sidebar.
Wäre so was vielleicht denkbar ?

Hallo!
Sorry wenn ich mich hier bei den Kommentaren mit einer Frage melde, aber ich konnte sonst kein Kontaktformular hier finden.
Ich suche schon seit Ewigkeiten ein Gadget für die Vista Sidebar, was ich vorher auf meinem Rechner hatte und jetzt (nach einer Neuinstallation) nicht mehr auftreiben kann, doch ist es immerhin hier in Deinem Blog in einem Eintrag vom 8. April 2007 (DSL Status Gadget – AR871) auf dem Screenshot abgebildet, es ist von den drei Gadgets das unterste.
Wenn Du einen Link zu einem Download dazu hast, oder es irgendwo hochladen könntest, wäre ich sehr dankbar 🙂

This is a great little gadget. I wish I had found it earlier. Can you get it added to the Windows Live Gallery?
Please also add your other great gadgets: in particular the volume control and the cpu meter.

no i dont want to have my gadgets on live anymore … i have the quad core usage and network traffic gadget still there … but i dont update them anymore. live is a bad place for developers because there are the most code thiefs.

Hm, was noch klasse wäre, das wäre ein Gadget im gleichen Stil, das den Traffic auf der Festplatte anzeigt.

Während ich bei anderen Gadgets oft Probleme hab, bei deinen gab es noch nie welche. Funktioniert immer alles auf anhieb und direkt!

This is a nice gadget, Thank You!
However, I have a problem… i use it undocked, and each time sidebar is started, both gadgets (i use both modes, memory/process) are moved a few pixels to the left direction from the last saved positions, and i have to manually move them to the right position, which annoying, could you please fix this? thanks so much…

Klasse Gadget, aber die Schriftgröße zeigt, warum das bei Win7 „Minianwendung“ heißt. 🙂
Könntest Du bei Deinen Gadgets nicht generell eine Fontgrößen-Option einbauen? So für uns alte Leute über 30?

Ich nutze Win7 64bit und musste leider feststellen, dass der angezeigte Ramverbrauch der Top5 irgendwie bei allen Prozessen ca. das doppelte anzeigt von dem, was der Taskmanager anzeigt. Ansonsten ein super Tool und die CPU Auslastung von Top5 passt. Für deine Gadgets würde ich mir übrigens ein black theme wünschen 🙂

I really like this Gadget on Windows 7 x64 Professional. It would be great if its size could be increased. It is too small on large monitors with 1600+ resolution. IF an option to increase the size by 50%, the gadget would be much easier to read.

I also agree about being able to adjust the font size. Most other gadgets I can go in and edit the gadget.html or the css, but these gadgets don’t appear to have any of that. Is there a way to do it?

Looks like the line-height or something needs to be increased too, the bottom of some letters (y,g,j,p) are getting cut off.

Hallo,
hab lange mit TOP 5 gearbeitet. Heute von einem auf den anderen Tag bleibt es leer. Es wird nur Top5 angezeigt mehr nicht obwohl ich es auf Prozessor eingestellt habe.????? Habe es auch neu heruntergeladen und installiert.

tolles Gadget, allerdings viel zu klein für ein 24 Zoll TFT. Die Schriftgröße müsste verdoppelt werden, damit man das von weiter weg auch lesen kann!

nice gadget – but I would like to have one improvement : choice of fontsize. I’m using a laptop with 1680×1050 at 15″ – that leaves things like your gadget damn small.

Hallo, ich nutze das Gadget auch gerne. Allerdings verbrät das Gadget enorm die Lebensdauer meiner Festplatte. Process Monitor zeigt ständige Zugriffe auf die
tzres.dll an. Wozu braucht dieses Gadget Zugriff auf die Zeitzonen? Und warum 1000 mal pro Minute?? Ein Fix wäre echt nett.

tut es nicht… schmeiss mal ALLE anderen gadgets aus der sidebar und starte diese dann neu und schau nochmal nach.
klingt eher nach irgend einem uhr/kalender etc. gadget.

Hi Orbmu2k, just wanna say this gadget is simply wonderful – just what I wanted! Actually all your gadgets are great – I’m using them almost exclusively.
I have one suggestion for this Top Five gadget though, which I hope will interest you: most of the time I have it set to the Processor view, but every now and then I want to change it to the Memory view for a quick look at the memory usage.
However, currently, in order to do this I must click the settings button, click on the menu, change it from Processor to Memory, and click OK. Then when I’m done, I have to go back again and change it back to Processor. This is a bit of a hassle when I only want to take a quick look at the Memory view for a few seconds.
My suggestion would be to allow the possibility of quickly switching back and forth between the two views without having to go into the settings. For example, it could perhaps be possible to click on the little icon in the top-left corner of the gadget, and this makes the view switch over to the next one, and then you click on the icon again and it switches back once more. This would allow us to quickly check the „other“ view for a short moment and then back to the first view again.
What do you think?

erstmal auch von mir ein großes Lob für dieses Gadget! Es gab hier im Blog ein paar Requests für ein leichteres Umschalten zwischen Processor und Memory View. Ich hab das einfach so gelöst, daß ich die Datei umbenannt habe und damit 2 Instanzen von Top5 laufen lassen kann – eine für den Processor View, die 2. (umbenannte) für den Memory View. So ist’s einfach super (ich hoffe ich handele mir damit keine Performance Probleme ein…?)! Ich dachte mir, ich schreib das hier mal rein, falls es nochmal ähnliche Anfragen gibt. Eine neue Version, die so eine „Doppeltanzeige“ automatisch ermöglicht, und eine Schriftgrößenanpassung bietet, wäre natürlich noch schöner…

Jeremy, I just realized that my posting in German might not be helpful for you… I found a workaround for your request for an easy switching between processor and memory view. Just copy the „TopFive10.gadget“ and rename it to let’s say „TopFive10_2.gadget“. So you have two files now with different names. This allows you to run two instances of the gadget, one set to processor view, the other one to memory view. In this way you have both information at a glance 🙂

Thanks for the tip Gabriela! And actually I was already aware of the possibility of running two instances of the gadget. Although that’s a possible solution, it doesn’t really work for me – firstly because I don’t have enough space left on my Sidebar for another gadget – it’s already full up, mostly with Orbmu2k’s other wonderful gadgets! – and secondly, I just don’t want to have to run two instances of the same gadget like that. I only need to see the Memory view on rare occasions. 99% of the time I’m happy to just see the Processor view. So I just want a quick and easy way to switch back and forth, eg. by clicking on the little icon in the top-left corner. That would be the perfect solution.
I’ve seen a similar gadget at http://www.myfavoritegadgets.info/monitors/TopProcessMonitor/topprocessmonitor.html which displays the top processes, memory usage, and a few other views, and lets you select how many items to display, and it *does* let you click a button to switch back and forth easily. However, I still prefer Orbmu2k’s gadget here, because it’s more compact – it doesn’t have a big title at the top – and compactness is a top priority for me, which is something Orbmu2k does very well – and I really love the colour scheme of Orbmu2k as well, it matches all the other gadgets – and well, it just looks and works great! Apart from the ability to switch back and forth.
(Well, being able to view top I/O processes as a third view would perhaps also be nice, but for now I’d be very happy just to be able to toggle between the current two views!)

A nice gadget. However it began to cause an extremely high CPU usage here recently. I had two instances running (processor and memory) for quite some time now (at least one year), using an update interval of 3 seconds and everything was fine.
Recently the WmiPrvSE.exe process started to use up my CPU, causing almost 100% usage on a Quad-Core and slowing down the entire system. I’m not sure what started this (some windows update?), but as soon as I remove the gadgets from my sidebar, everything is fine again. If I add them again, CPU usage goes up again, although not instantly. It took me a while to find out, that this is caused by the gadget, so I thougt it might be best to mention that here.

ich hätte ne riesen Bitte an Dich, Orbmu2k:
ich nutze so ziemlich alle systembezogenen gadgets von Deiner Seite und absolut überzeugt von Deinen tools weil Sie nicht nur funktionell sind sondern auch ressourcensparend und auch noch gut aussehn.
Leider fehlt mir seit langem ein Gadget das speziell die Festplattenaktivität anzeigt. Und zwar nicht nur n Balken der sich füllt wenn die Platte rödelt, sondern auch den Prozess der schreibt. Damit man den identifizieren kann.
Kannst Du so etwas realisieren?
Ich stelle es mir optisch am ehesten so vor wie „intelcoreseries“, ca 5 prozesse mit anzeige auslastung der schreibaktivität auf der Platte. Zusätzlich wäre ne Anzeige wieviel Speicherplatz noch übrig ist, aber ohne Grafik toll. Im Prinzipo ähnlich wie das gadget „drivesmonitor“ von Igogo, der ein paar Zeilen weiter oben hier reingespammt hat. Aber eben von Dir, in „gut“ und nicht so überfrachtet. Am wichtigsten aber, und das hab ich bisher nirgends gefunden, eine Anzeige WELCHER Prozess da genau die Platte auslastet (wie im Ressourcenmonitor des Taskmanagers.
Wäre echt toll wenn Du Dich da ransetzen würdest.

But i got a little bug (or smthng) it does not show any process since yesterday… What could be the problem? I guess it happened after installing Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus 2010 VL 14.0.4763.1000 x64 (i’m not sure)

I am encoutering the same issue as Ches however I did not install anything new yesterday / today. Like Ches my gadget does appear however no processes are listed for the gadget.

I’ll just ‚bump‘ an idea previously suggested by Jeremy in comment #54… any chance the Top 5 gadget could provide a ‚toggle‘ to switch between ‚Processor‘ and ‚Memory‘ display? Just click or double-click on the gadget title bar?
As Jeremy mentions, clicking through Options or running two instances of the gadget isn’t as convenient as a double-click to switch from Processor to Memory.
